In Bujumbura, the only point-to-point transport you can reliably flag down is the city's network of shared taxis, small sedans painted white with a colored stripe that indicates their general route. They cruise the main boulevards and key junctions such as Place de l'Indépendance, Marché Central and the avenues radiating toward Kinindo, Kiriri and Gitega. To use one, simply stand on the curb and raise your hand. If the driver slows, call out your destination through the window. If it lies along his route he'll nod and you hop in the front or back seat. Rides are shared, so expect to wait until the car fills and to make quick stops for other passengers. When you want to get off, rap lightly on the window or say "hapa" ("here") and hand the fare forward. For more privacy or a direct trip, negotiate a "course spéciale" before boarding.
